Letter regarding the Food for All Symposium being held Nov. 16th
Dear Parents and Guardians,
We are excited to let you know that on November 16th, Musquodoboit Rural High School, in conjunction with the Healthy School Community Committee, will be hosting the Food For All Symposium, as part of the Thoughtful Food Project. The Food For All Symposium is an event organized by students, for students.
This full-day symposium will feature an impressive array of speakers and presenters – all professionals working in the foods and agricultural industries, in our own community and from across the province. There will be some amazing presentations, including:
using satellites, drones, and lasers to map soils
- demonstrations with Working Dogs for the Food Hunt
- operating a commercial greenhouse
- seeing a shipping container turned into a farm using hydroponics
- hands on cooking skills
- community gardens
- farming poultry
- hands on fish-filleting
Students will have an opportunity to sign up in advance for a number of workshops, according to their interest.
To prepare for this event, students will be doing all of the hands-on planning and preparation in peer-mentor groups or “pods” of combined grade levels. Each group will have students that range from grades 7- 12; they will work together during designated class times in the coming weeks to contact media, prepare registration materials, plan food and refreshments, work out parking and signage logistics, and much more.
We’re really excited for our students to have this opportunity. As far as we’re aware, nothing like this has ever been done before, and we are looking forward to seeing our learners excel in this hands-on, minds-on, real-life experience.
If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to call the school for more information.
